Statistics on United States beekeeping are sparse and not totally accurate. The following is an estimate of the state of the industry in 1993:

Historically, beekeeping has declined in the United States. In 1947, there were 5.9 million beehives. This number decreased steadily, leveling off at 4.1 million in the 1980s, but falling off again to a present level of 2.9 million.
