  • Abstract
  • New Zealand has an enviable AFB control record. In the period 1990-1999, AFB incidence decreased by an average of 11% per annum, from 1.2% of beehives at the beginning of the period, to 0.3% of beehives in 1999. The current level is the lowest in New Zealand in 22 years, and the 3rd lowest in the country’s history.

What’s remarkable about this rapid decrease in AFB levels is that it was accomplished without the use of antibiotics that are a feature of AFB control in most other parts of the world. While in some countries strains of AFB are now being found that are resistant to these antibiotics, in New Zealand the use of antibiotics to control AFB is illegal.

Elimination of American Foulbrood Without the Use of Drugs reveals the methods New Zealanders have employed to achieve this unprecedented result. The manual combines research and scientific understanding regarding American foulbrood (in particular recent research conducted in New Zealand on the subject), with practical techniques New Zealand beekeepers have used to overcome large-scale American foulbrood outbreaks and eliminate the disease from their hives.

The manual is designed to be useful to all beekeepers, whether they own one beehive or manage a large-scale commercial beekeeping enterprise.

Elimination of American Foulbrood Without the Use of Drugs has been published by the National Beekeepers’ Association of New Zealand, as part of its responsibility as Management Agency for the National Pest Management Strategy for American Foulbrood.
